Karen Black

Principal psychologist and owner

I am Karen Black, the Principal Psychologist and owner of Laneway Counselling. I am a registered Psychologist with over 20 years of clinical experience to support you through life’s complex and difficult times.

I truly care about my clients' well-being and provide compassionate and professional counselling services that cater to the individual needs of my clients. I am experienced in providing a range of therapeutic services to those dealing with challenging life experiences. Melissa Smith

Client relations

Melissa is the caring and compassionate front of house at Laneway Counselling. She is here to ensure your experience is smooth and to help overcome any challenges in the process of attending Laneway Counselling. Melissa's role is to communicate with clients, referrers and other professionals to better understand what they aim to accomplish and how Laneway Counselling can help.


Madeline Trump

Social Worker

Madeline is a social worker with 11 years of experience in child and adolescent mental health both in Australia and New Zealand. Madeline has been trained in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and the Circle of Security parenting program as well as a range of other therapies that can be utilized to empower you to make positive change in your life!
Madeline is a bright, bubbly, empathetic member of the team who loves her job and has a particular interest in (but is not limited to) anxiety, improving self esteem and confidence, and working on parenting and attachment.


Jane Newland

Mental Health Accredited Social Worker

I am a Mental Health Accredited Social Worker and am keen to work alongside you to support you to feel heard in a safe space and to navigate challenges and promote mental health and wellbeing.

I am a compassionate and holistic trauma counsellor and have worked mostly with victims/survivors of sexual abuse and family violence. I understand trauma impacts individuals uniquely and I will tailor your needs to meet your goals, expectations, and recovery.

My training and experiences also include provision of clinical supervision and I welcome the opportunity to offer other health professionals or counsellors a focus on critical reflection and a greater understanding of the context of self in the counselling space.


Samantha Pond

Provisional Psychologist
BPsychSci, GradCert Mental Health, BPsychSci(Hons)

Samantha is a Provisional Psychologist currently studying Masters of Professional Psychology. Samantha has experience with adolescents in residential care, child protection, and adult community mental health. She has undertaken training through the Australian Childhood Foundation and Trauma Informed Practice. Samantha approaches her work with compassion, dedication, and empathy, with a strong basis in client-centred practice.


Gurvin Gakhal

Provisional Psychologist

Gurvin is a Provisional Psychologist. Gurvin began working in psychology roles when living in Singapore that drew on her skills of empathy and compassion. Upon moving to Australia she has had a range of different roles including Applied Behavioural Analysis, Support Worker, and previous experience as a child protection case worker.  Gurvin has a passion for mental health and enhancing the safety and wellbeing of our society.
Gurvin is fluent in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and has a Level 2 proficiency in Chinese. We look forward to working with Gurvin at Laneway Counselling from late February.
